【 Panda Knowledge 】 Appearance Features

The giant panda is plump and bears like, with a round head and short tail. Its head and body are 1200~1800mm long, and its tail is 100~120mm long. The weight ranges from 80 to 120kg, with a maximum weight of up to 180kg. Pandas raised in captivity are slightly heavier, with male individuals generally slightly larger than females. The hair color of the head and body is distinct in black and white, but black is not pure black and white is not pure white, but black with a hint of brown, and white with a hint of yellow. Individuals in the Qinling region are relatively large, with rough body hair and slightly brown abdominal hair. Minshan (especially Qingchuan Pingwu) has smaller individuals, thinner body hair, and less obvious brown abdominal hair, but individuals in Liangshan are not too small.

The black and white appearance is beneficial for hiding on trees in dense forests and snow covered ground, making it difficult for natural enemies to detect. Relatively sharp claws and well-developed and powerful front and rear limbs are beneficial for giant pandas to quickly climb tall trees.

The skin of giant pandas is thick, with the thickest part reaching up to 10mm. The skin thickness of different parts of the body also varies, with the back of the body thicker than the ventral side and the outer side thicker than the inner side. The average thickness of the skin is about 5mm, and it is white, elastic, and resilient. Their thick and rough fur can help them weather the harsh winter. They don't need to hibernate, even in the cold winter, they still forage in the snow.
